Field Trip: A visit to Bed-Stuy's Shops of Lewis Avenue

Geographically speaking, Bedford-Stuyvesant is a very large community. As its name implies, the Bed-Stuy Gateway business district is merely the entry point to what is a large community composed of a collection of micro-neighborhoods with their own main street retail strips.

We decided to explore one of these burgeoning neighborhood retail streets - The Shops of Lewis Avenue, which is located in the Stuyvesant Heights Historic District section of Bedford-Stuyvesant. Located northeast of the Bed-Stuy Gateway business district, the Shops of Lewis Avenue has a budding collection of independent and minority-owned businesses - with some quaint boutiques - that help to give Bed-Stuy a unique neighborhood feel.
