Lots of New Storefront Action

It's been a while since we've had a chance to really update this site with juicy tidbits of retail happenings in the Stuy, and we apologize. Please don't take our silence as an indication that nothing has gone on in Bed-Stuy Gateway, because as the following picture indicates, a place we speculated a year ago as a rumored site for a Dallas BBQ, has turned into a prime example of retail co-location: Gamestop and Children's Place - Genius! More news to come on other storefront developments.

T-Mobile Set to Land at 1218-D Fulton Street

TmobileWe knew it was going to happen. Hot on the heels of the news of SprintPCS's opening in the Bed-Stuy Gateway is this rumor which has since been confirmed of T-Mobile's entry into Central Brooklyn. T-Mobile is going to set up a company shop at 1218 Fulton Street, at the intersection of Arlington Place, in a double-wide space currently half-occupied by Gentleman's Quarters.

Gentleman's Quarter's is set to close shop by the end of June 2006 and T-Mobile will reportedly take over the space the next day and begin build-out of the store that will occupy the Gentleman's Quarter's space and the vacant storefront next door.

Profile a Business: TaJasia Soul Food at 1489 Fulton Street

Dsc00282_1 Tajasia Soul Food opened it's doors at 1489 Fulton Street (between Tompkins and Throop) close to three months ago, (right around the time Applebee's opened) and it is a very welcome entry to the scene here in the Bed-Stuy Gateway business district. We are very happy to see a new independent and minority-owned retail offering that is in a category this district actually needs more of: in this case a restaurant with table service, a welcoming interior design, presumably good food (we haven't had the fortune of actually trying it yet, but we'll get around to that) AND live entertainment - hooooray! Tajasia boasts of "Homemade Soul Food" and offers live music starting at 6:00pm on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. We would love to hear what you think of Tajasia Soul Food. Please send us an email with your comments!

What: Tajasia Soul Food
Where: 1489 Fulton Street, Brooklyn, NY 11216 (between Tompkins Ave and Throop Ave)
When: Open for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. 6:00am to 10:00pm Monday - Thursday; 6:00am-midnight riday; 8:00am to midnight Saturday; 8:00am to 9:00pm Sunday3

The Shiny Spaceship From Planet Sprint Has Landed

Dsc00274
Taking the bus down the Fulton Street the other day, we were surprised to see this shiny new store which has landed with almost no warning on Fulton Street just west of Nostrand Avenue.

As easy as it is to berate the chain malling of New York's street's, one easy and objective observation to make is that these chains tend to come into the neighborhood and present their best face possible with very nice storefronts and facades. In our humble opinion, a pretty new storefront like Sprint's does raise the aesthetic bar higher in this business district.

With a Sprint PCS-owned store having landed on Fulton Street, it would seem that Cingular or Verizon must not be far behind.

Susan's Collection, Out - Cozy Boutique, In

Dsc00243_2 Dsc00245_1 Dsc00244_2

Another business bites the dust, but it is quickly replaced.
Susan's Collection, located at 1325 Fulton Street, closed shop for good just this week. But as soon as it vacated its storefront, another small women's clothing shop, Cozy Boutique, quickly took its place. We wish Cozy Boutique sucess on Fulton Street, but seriously wish they could have entered the district as a better neighbor and didn't go with the oversized blue awning (not to mention in violation of city regulations) that workers began installing today.
