Profile a Business: Shaping Bed-Stuy's Curves

Curvescollage For a woman, a walk into any fitness center typically means an encounter with complicated machines being used by body builder types with bulging muscles - an intimidating sight. The atmosphere is quite different when one enters the Curves Fitness Center for Women of Bed-Stuy, located at 1542 Fulton Street, 2nd Floor (Between Throop Avenue and Albany Avenue).

Here, the owner Sandra or one of her employees greets you by name with a smile on her face and an enthusiastic tone, ready to encourage you through your workout. After working as a public health nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital for over thirty years, Sandra had a knowledge of the health conditions (obesity, high blood pressure, cholesterol, depression, low self-esteem, stress) that particularly affect the Bed-Stuy community and wanted to open a business where she could continue change the health and lives of her former patients.

As a member of Curves herself, Sandra opened the Curves of Bed-Stuy fitness center in April 2004 as the perfect extension to her previous occupation and way of life.

Curves of Bed-Stuy is here to service the needs of the women of Bed-Stuy and surrounding areas who want to stay fit and healthy.  For an introduction to Curves of Bed-Stuy and a free Figure Analysis, come in or call 718-771-0097.

At Curves of Bed-Stuy, you will hear energizing music that helps to keep you moving as you make your way around the circuit of eleven machines and recovery stations.  Just two and a half rounds through this circuit completes a full thirty minute total body workout. Unlike at many other gyms, there is no sitting around waiting for a machine: the workouts are fast paced and there is a thirty second time limit and a recording to remind you to change stations. A Fitness Tech (no additional charge) is on the floor to give you instruction on the machines and encouragement to keep you going.

With the option of a one-year or month-to-month contract, Curves has made keeping life fitness for Bed-Stuy's ladies easy and fun. Regular exercise has proven to lower stress, cholesterol, high blood pressure and other conditions. The benefits of keeping control and reducing the risk of these conditions has some insurance companies even paying for gym subscriptions at places like Curves as part of their plans. It would be worth your while to check out if your insurance company offers this benefit.

Curves provides an essential service to the community that is designed to keep all of Bed-Stuy's mothers, grandmothers, sisters and wives strong and healthy. The center is also a supportive atmosphere where  members easily form bonds that reinforce each another's goals of being healthy and fit.  Glenda Jones, a satisfied member of two years states that Curves “is a more comfortable environment because it is just women all here to do the same thing.”
